DIY Guide to Summer Safety

DIY Guide to Summer Safety
With the arrival of Memorial Day weekend, it seems like the warmer months are finally upon us. It may not officially be summer yet, but it’s definitely approaching quickly!

Keeping that in mind, here are some quick tips for Summer Safety!

Let’s Talk BBQ!

Summer means the return of the barbecue! Now, that’s truly a cause for celebration. Of course, it’s important to keep safety in mind before firing up the grill. After all, playing with fire can be more dangerous than many of us realize.

  • Be sure to keep children out of harm’s way. That means to keep little hands as far removed from hot surfaces as possible. When you’re grilling, enlist another guest to keep a close eye on the kiddies.
  • If you’re using a gas grill, make sure there are no leaks that can cause a fire or explosion. For charcoal grills, be extra careful with highly flammable lighter fluid. Disaster can strike quickly and without warning!
  • Dispose of coals only when they’ve fully cooled. Don’t risk unnecessary burning and injury.

Summer Safety Means Water Safety

At Pool Fence DIY, we understand that summer safety also means water safety. Before having guests over, be sure to add as many layers of protection to your pool as possible. While we cannot guarantee that our yards are completely free from danger, there are several measures we can take.

  • Invest in a proper mesh pool fence.
  • Active Supervision should not be ignored. Someone should always keep a close, undistracted eye on swimming children. You can read our full article about active supervision here.
  • Consider swimming lessons to increase your confidence in the water. That goes for people of all ages! After all, it’s never too late to learn how to swim.
  • Heading out on a boat? Don’t rely on floaties! Be sure to always wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket. Not all floatation devices are built equally. Floatation devices that have been meticulously verified by the U.S. Coast Guard meet approved safety standards. Here’s a handy article to help you choose the right life jacket!
  • If you’re partying at the beach, make sure you’re only swimming in lifeguard-protected waters. You see, a trained lifeguard will be able to keep a close eye on you and any other swimmers. He or she will also be able to keep swimmers out of dangerous areas. In the event of a problem, he or she will quickly spring into action. Above all, everyone should closely follow any and all instructions issued by trained lifeguards.

Don’t Forget To Wear Sun Block!

One of the biggest problems with summer safety is, you guessed it, sunburn! Don’t forget to wear suntan lotion if you’re heading outside. All those rays can be harmful to your health. Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Throughout the day, reapply it as needed. It will wear off with enough time!

Finally, the number one rule of summer safety is to keep hydrated. It may seem simple, but many people often forget to drink enough water. By following these simple guidelines, you’ll be sure to have a happy and healthy season!
