The Importance of Lifeguards

The Importance of Lifeguards
Most of us can agree, it has been a strange few years. With the pandemic, several states have been experiencing a shortage of properly trained lifeguards. Keeping that in mind, the importance of lifeguards cannot be understated.

A Lack of Lifeguards?

As mentioned in the introduction, some places are seeing a lower number of trained lifeguards than in previous years. With a bit of digging, the pandemic is the likely the cause for this decreased enrollment in training programs. Even though COVID-19 is not typically transmitted via swimming, many public pools have been closed. If not closed entirely, these pools have had limited hours of operation. As a result, there was less demand for lifeguards. Unfortunately, those of us who focus on water safety know that this can lead to danger. This is where the importance of lifeguards comes into play.

Understanding the Importance of Lifeguards

Becoming a lifeguard is one of the noblest jobs a person can train for. For younger folks, it may seem like a simple summer job for some extra money. For others, it’s a lifelong calling. No matter the reasons a person has for becoming a lifeguard, it is easily one of the most important jobs a person can hold.

When disaster strikes, these brave people are capable of saving the lives of swimmers and their loved ones.

Never Swim Without a Lifeguard

The importance of lifeguards is a crucial component to water safety. Any person can learn CPR training. In fact, every person should become CPR certified. That said, a lifeguard also has several key advantages over an average swimmer.

For one, they are certified as a strong swimmer. Additionally, they have specialized training and a key eye for details. From their higher vantage points, lifeguards are better able to watch the water for any trouble that may arise. When a lifeguard notices a potential drowning situation in the water, this makes it easier for them to spring into action.

For swimmers, the importance of lifeguards should be as a first line of defense. Put simply, never swim without a lifeguard. Always obey posted warnings and signs. If there is any warning of danger or a lifeguard is not present, never simply assume the water is safe.

The presence of a properly trained lifeguard is critical to water safety. They possess detailed knowledge on how to save others from drowning.

Potential Lifeguards: Finding Proper Training

Now that we understand the importance of lifeguards, let’s talk about training. After all, lifeguards don’t just grow on trees. They require proper certification in a number of water safety areas. These include:

  • Basic lifeguard training
  • CPR
  • First Aid

To earn these certifications, a hopeful lifeguard will need training. Fortunately, there are many organizations that can help. We’ve written a full blog about becoming a lifeguard, but here are some of the basic points to consider.

For instance, the American Red Cross offers lifeguarding and water safety courses all year long. Students will be instructed in necessary skills by trained professionals.

No matter where you learn, the total amount of time you’ll need to train ranges anywhere from 15 to 30 hours. This dedication of time is key to the importance of lifeguards. Water safety is serious business, and it should always be treated as such.
